Our school believes that children who are good readers and writers will be better, happier students and citizens. We have made a commitment to do all that we can to ensure that all of our students will be good readers and writers. Because our school recognizes that all children learn differently, we know that we must find ways to reach children no matter what their strengths and weaknesses might be. Our teachers are using a method of instruction called the Reader's Workshop Model, and we want to tell you about it. We also want to ask that you play an important part in helping us with the development of your child as a reader and writer.

The Stamford Public School District's philosophy is that a Literacy Curriculum be designed to support a child-centered learning environment where each student is viewed as an individual learner within a community of readers and writers. Instruction in this environment is formed by current research which indicates that the most efective classrooms provide a balanced literacy approach. Such an approach engages students in meaningful and purposeful reading and writing experiences through Reading and Writing Workshops. These experiences are intended to value the various stages of reading and writing development, the learning styles, and the diversity of students in an environment that fosters social interaction, provides challenge and encourages risk-taking. This philosophy is based on the following beliefs:

* All children can learn at high levels.

* Instruction matters.

* Reading and Writing are interconnected processes.

* Effective instruction is responsive to the needs of
the learner.

* Learning is a social process.

* Time is essential for independent reading and writing, in the classroom, everyday.

* Engaging instruction is rigorous, relevant to students' lives, and built on relationships.

* Students thrive when given independence and ownership of their surroundings and their learning.

* Students read and write throughout the day in all content areas.

*Students are provided access to technology which enhances communication.

* Feedback is essential to continuous improvement.
