Resources and Tips

School health services are provided through personnel assigned by Stamford’s Department of Health.  The nurse is available for first aid, screenings (vision, hearing and scoliosis), monitoring of immunizations and checking for infections and contagious conditions.

The school nurse is available every day, except in cases where she is ill or called away from the building.  A dental hygienist is assigned to the school and a dentist treats children one day each week.

SCHOOL NURSE

K. T. Murphy School’s nurse is Mrs. Cathy Dodick.

The school nurse will contact you when there is need to make a decision about your child’s care.  Please be sure to immediately update your child’s records when there is a change of phone number, address or place of employment.  This includes emergency phone numbers.

DENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM

K. T. Murphy School’s Public Health Dental Hygienist is Ms. Bishop-Pullan.

The Dental Health Program is a prevention-oriented program, provided by the Department of Health, Public Health Dental Hygienists who are educated licensed professionals.

The dental hygienist provides classroom education and an annual dental screening.  If dental concerns are found, parents will be notified.  A dental sealant program is offered at no cost to the city’s second grade students.  Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the fully erupted, healthy permanent molars.  Sealants fill in the groves on the chewing surfaces of molars to prevent cavities.  K. T. Murphy School has a licensed dental clinic where students can receive dental cleaning, fluoride treatments, x-rays, sealants and fillings.  Parents must complete and sign a permission form for a child to participate in the sealant and clinic programs.

MEDICATION

In order to insure the safety and protection of your child and all K. T. Murphy School children, please do not send medication to school with your child.  The nurse will administer medications only if a standard form is completed by the physician and signed by the parent.  Children may not self-administer any medication at school.

SCREENING PROGRAMS

Vision and hearing screening of all students is done each year.

All fifth grade students are screened for scoliosis.  The purpose of this screening program is to detect a spinal curvature in its earliest stages so that treatment or close observation can be undertaken before serious progression occurs.
