KT Murphy Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)

If you’re a parent looking to get involved and strengthen school-family ties, getting involved with the PTO can be a powerful way to make a difference.

What is the Parent Teacher Organization?

Our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is a group of parents, teachers, and school staff who work together to support and improve the school community. It is a volunteer-run, independent organization that focuses on enhancing students’ educational experiences.

What does the PTO do?

  • Organizes events like school fairs, family nights, and fundraisers

  • Raises money for enrichment activities, field trips, and school improvements

  • Supports teachers through appreciation activities and volunteer help

  • Builds community

Who runs the PTO?

The PTO is led by an Executive Board composed of KT Murphy parents/guardian, teachers, and staff. From within this group, the board elects a President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.

Member-at-Large is ideal for someone who wants to get involved, contribute ideas, and learn more about PTO operations before possibly running for an officer position in the future.

What happens in a PTO executive board meeting?

The PTO executive board meets monthly during the school year, usually over video (Google meet). Board members hear updates on the school community from staff and teachers, plan and review upcoming events, and make recommendations for student and community enrichment activities. Individual students, teachers or incidents are not discussed at executive board meetings.

Can I join a PTO executive board meeting?

Parents are invited to observe the executive board meetings if they would like to join on an ad hoc basis. After you have attended at least one meeting and volunteered for at least one event, you may consider a more active role as a member-at-large. (More on that below.)

How does the PTO communicate?

Weekly PTO newsletters, email blasts, school messenger, Remind app and flyers sent home in folders. If you are not receiving the digital communications, please email the PTO to get signed up at ktmurphypto@gmail.com

How can I get involved?

Volunteering: The biggest need is for volunteers for PTO-sponsored events. From chaperoning movie matinees and staffing the book fair, to decorating your car for Trunk or Treat, there’s something for everyone! Want to get involved? Sign up through SignUpGenius or send us an email at ktmurphypto@gmail.com — we’d love to have your help!

Event Chairs: We also need event chairs to lead planning and production of these events. PTO board members and volunteers are there to support all along the way. Multicultural Fair, Bingo Night, dances, and other events need your leadership! No specific experience necessary–just a commitment to the event and willingness to plan and organize. We’d love to hear from you, please email us at ktmurphypto@gmail.com.

Board Members/Member-at-Large: Ready to take it to the next level? Join the PTO board as a member-at-large! The only requirement is that you’ve attended at least one executive board meeting, and volunteered for at least one event. The commitment is monthly video meetings and an expectation that you will be able to volunteer at some of the events throughout the year.

Small Business Involvement: Do you work for or run a small business that can help by donating products or services? We’d love to hear from you and have creative ways to acknowledge your business in the yearbook and at events. Email us and let us know how you can help!

If English is not your first language, please email us and we will help you find the right role, and potentially match you with someone who can translate or support.

Si el inglés no es tu primer idioma, por favor envíanos un correo electrónico y te ayudaremos a encontrar el puesto adecuado, y posiblemente te pondremos en contacto con alguien que pueda traducir o brindarte apoyo.
